No. The RD1-Pro cannot control Hue smart bulbs from within the Philips Hue ecosystem. In Hue it is for Dimmer Mode control of traditional non-smart lighting. Hue smart-bulb control requires a more capable automation platform.
While direct Zigbee binding is technically possible, results vary significantly depending on the specific smart bulbs used, and it is not how the RD1-Pro is designed to operate. To ensure a stable setup and consistent performance for all button and rotary events, we strongly recommend using hub logic and automations rather than direct binding.
Yes. The smart system must be able to receive RD1-Pro events and send commands to the bulbs. The bulbs can be paired directly or integrated into that same platform, but the platform needs access to both sides.
Yes. In Remote Mode and DPM, the RD1-Pro sends events. The hub or automation platform must translate those events into bulb actions such as toggle, brightness step, colour temperature, scene selection, or colour change.
Yes, if Home Assistant or another capable hub can see both the RD1-Pro events and the bulbs. The bulbs do not have to be Zigbee as long as the automation platform can control them and the wired circuit keeps them powered.
Smart bulbs must remain permanently powered so they stay online. Remote Mode decouples the knob from electrical dimming and switching, so the circuit remains powered while the knob sends Zigbee events to the hub.
A smart bulb without power cannot receive Zigbee/Wi-Fi commands, run automations, report state, update firmware, or respond to the app. Cutting power at the switch defeats the purpose of the smart bulb.
Yes. That is the purpose of Remote Mode. The RD1-Pro keeps the bulb circuit powered and sends commands/events to the smart system, which then controls the bulbs.
The safest support workflow is: test the dimmer on a conventional dimmable non-smart lamp circuit first, factory reset, select Remote Mode, pair to the smart system, confirm events, then move to the smart-bulb circuit and create automations. This reduces the chance of accidentally dimming smart bulbs before REM mode is set.
Do not use DPM when the RD1-Pro is wired to the same circuit as smart bulbs. Even if you intend not to use Endpoint 1, it still creates a dimmable circuit endpoint. Use REM for smart bulbs on the same circuit. DPM is suitable for conventional wired lights plus separate remote automations.
In most cases the circuit needs enough smart-bulb standby/off-state load to provide about 3W while the bulbs are off. If the smart bulbs draw less than that, an LED bypass is usually needed.
Four or more Hue bulbs are more likely to provide enough off-state load for the no-neutral dimmer circuit to remain stable. With fewer bulbs the total standby load may be too low, causing flicker or flashing unless a bypass is fitted.
One or two smart bulbs often do not provide enough off-state load. The likely symptoms are flickering, pulsing, or flashing. Fit a correctly installed LED bypass or redesign the circuit so the dimmer has a stable load.
