1. Comparing Our Dimmer Models

What is the difference between the RD1 and the RD1-Pro?

The RD1 is our standard smart rotary dimmer. It controls traditional dimmable LED or halogen lighting circuits.

The RD1-Pro adds advanced decoupled modes, such as Remote Mode (Smart Bulb Mode) and Dual Purpose Mode. These modes let you use the physical dial as a wireless Zigbee remote. You can control smart bulbs or run automation scenes without cutting physical power to the light fixture.

What is the difference between the RD1-Pro and the older C202 dimmer?

The RD1-Pro updates our C202 dimmer with a much slimmer body. We also added built-in limits for lowest and highest brightness, alongside live energy tracking.

Unlike the C202, the RD1-Pro offers true Remote and Dual Purpose modes for smart bulbs. Multi-way wiring has also changed. The older C202 uses basic push-buttons for multi-way dimming. The RD1-Pro connects seamlessly with our dedicated RD1C companion devices, enabling effortless rotary control from several wall switches.

Which model should I choose: C202, RD1, or RD1-Pro?

Your choice depends on your wiring layout and the types of light bulbs you use.

Pick the C202 if you want a simple traditional smart dimmer that matches your existing setups or fits a specific look.

Pick the RD1 for standard dimmable lights. It gives you precise brightness control, power tracking, and simple multi-point dimming with the RD1C companion switch.

Pick the RD1-Pro if the installation involves smart bulbs, decoupled control, button/rotary events, automations, or a no-load Remote Mode use case.

2. Connecting to Smart Home Systems & Hubs

Will the RD1 or RD1-Pro work with my smart home system?

Yes. Both models use standard Zigbee and connect with major smart hubs. They work smoothly with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, SmartThings, Hubitat, and Philips Hue.

To use the advanced RD1-Pro features like Remote Mode or Dual Purpose Mode, you need a hub that can read wireless remote actions. Your smart system can then trigger custom home automations from the knob.

Which hubs/platforms are supported by RD1 and RD1-Pro?

We officially support Home Assistant (via ZHA), Zigbee2MQTT, SmartThings, Hubitat, and Philips Hue.

Zigbee2MQTT shows every single device setting right out of the box. SmartThings and Hubitat require you to install our free, dedicated Candeo drivers. If you use ZHA on an older Home Assistant setup, make sure to keep your system updated so all device options show up correctly.

Does the RD1-Pro work with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, SmartThings, Hubitat, and Philips Hue?

Yes, but different hubs expose different features. Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, SmartThings, and Hubitat are best if you want to use Remote Mode or Dual Purpose Mode for smart bulb control.

The Philips Hue hub only supports the RD1-Pro as a standard dimmer for normal, non-smart light bulbs. You cannot use it to control smart bulbs through the native Hue app.

3. Features Supported by Each Platform

What features are supported on each platform?

Zigbee2MQTT supports the full list of advanced features natively. SmartThings and Hubitat open up these options once you install our custom Candeo drivers.

Home Assistant users on ZHA can see all features by keeping their setup updated. The Philips Hue app only provides standard on, off, and dimming controls. It does not pass through advanced button or dial events.

Does Philips Hue support all RD1-Pro features, or only dimming mode?

Philips Hue only supports standard dimming mode. You cannot use the module to control Hue smart bulbs from inside the native Hue app via Remote or Dual Purpose settings.

To control smart bulbs with the dimmer knob, pair the device with a flexible system like Home Assistant, SmartThings, or Hubitat. These platforms let you build the automation rules you need.

4. Wireless Range & Mesh Networking

Are the RD1 and RD1-Pro Zigbee routers or end devices?

Both models act as full Zigbee routers. They actively repeat your wireless signal to expand and strengthen your whole smart home network.

The router feature stays active all the time. Even if you switch the RD1-Pro to Remote Mode to control smart bulbs, the device still acts as a powered signal router on your mesh network.

Does the RD1C companion dimmer act as a Zigbee router?

No. The RD1C has no wireless radio inside. It is a purely wired companion unit that handles physical multi-way switching over your standard copper wiring.

Because it lacks a smart chip, it does not link with your hub. It cannot repeat wireless signals or join the Zigbee mesh network.
