No. The RD1 and RD1-Pro are designed specifically for standard UK no-neutral lighting circuits. They directly replace your existing manual wall switches. The dimmer module itself does not have a terminal for a neutral connection.
No. You must never connect a neutral wire to the dimmer terminals. If you find a neutral wire inside your wall back box, it should remain securely terminated in a separate block.
This neutral wire may be helpful later if you need to install an LED bypass. However, it does not connect to the dimmer module itself.
For a standard installation, follow our official wiring diagrams closely. Always isolate the mains power at the consumer unit before touching any wires.
Connect your permanent live wire to the L terminal. Then connect your switched live wire to the lamp/load terminal. Never use trial and error to guess your conductors. If you are unsure, stop immediately and contact a qualified electrician.
The permanent live wire goes directly into the L terminal. The switched-live wire, which runs to your light fixture, goes into the lamp/load terminal.
Reversing these wires can cause strange issues. The dial might still dim the lights manually, but the smart Zigbee side will fail to pair or stop working entirely. The dimmer needs a constant live feed to keep its internal smart chip powered.
Yes. Our support logs show that the connected light bulb can often still be turned on and off manually if the wires are reversed. However, the Zigbee radio inside will lack the stable power it needs to pair with your hub.

Yes. Both models are engineered to fit standard UK electrical back boxes with a depth of 35 mm.
We highly recommend using a 47 mm back box whenever possible. The extra depth gives you far more room to dress the electrical wires safely behind the dimmer module.
While a 35 mm box will work, a deeper box makes the physical installation much easier and prevents pinching the conductors.
Yes. They are fully compatible with the vast majority of standard, non-grid third-party faceplates available in the UK.
Always test the mechanical fit before final installation. Ensure the rotary spindle aligns perfectly with the center hole and the knob turns smoothly without rubbing against the faceplate plate.
No. These modules are not intended for use with custom grid-system faceplates. For the best results, use our official Candeo faceplates or a standard, non-grid third-party plate.
No. The built-in status LEDs light up only during configuration tasks. This includes factory resets, mode changes, and Zigbee pairing sequences.
During normal everyday operation, the LEDs remain completely dark so they will not disturb your room.
The status LEDs sit directly behind the front plate around the central rotary spindle. The light shines outward through the gap around the base of the knob.
If the indicator light is difficult to see under bright room lighting, simply pull the plastic knob straight off the metal spindle. Removing the knob is usually enough to see the light clearly. You do not need to unscrew the entire faceplate from the wall.
No. Pulling off the removable rotary knob provides a clear view of the configuration light area. Never loosen or remove the main wall faceplate while the circuit is live, as this exposes dangerous high-voltage electrical connections unnecessarily.
Yes, but only for specific smart automation layouts. When using Remote Mode to control smart bulbs wirelessly, you can install the device without a traditional light fixture.
However, you must install an LED bypass across the circuit. The bypass acts as a dummy load to keep the dimmer safely powered. Check our official diagrams for this specific layout, and always select Remote Mode before connecting the device to your smart bulbs.
To avoid permanent hardware damage, never connect multiple smart dimmers together on the same circuit loop. Do not try to use two RD1 or RD1-Pro units where an RD1C companion dimmer is required for multi-way switching.
Never connect a neutral wire to the dimmer terminals, and do not overload the device with incompatible light bulbs. Finally, ensure you do not send a dimmed electrical output to a smart bulb. Always switch the dimmer to Remote Mode before using it with smart lighting.
