1. Bulb Compatibility & Load Limits

What type of bulbs are supported?

For Dimmer Mode and wired dimming, use high-quality dimmable LED bulbs or halogen lamps. Non-dimmable bulbs should not be connected to a dimming output.

Can I use non-dimmable bulbs?

No, not on the dimmed lighting output. Use only dimmable bulbs for standard Dimmer Mode or DPM wired-light control. Smart bulbs used in Remote Mode are controlled by smart commands rather than electrical dimming, but the circuit still needs to be wired as instructed.

Can I use halogen bulbs?

Yes. Halogen lamps are supported if the installation remains within the dimmer's load limits. Some halogen or older LED lamps may perform better in leading-edge mode, while most LEDs are expected to work best in trailing-edge mode.

What is the minimum load requirement?

The published minimum is 5W per lamp and 5W total per circuit. Candeo recommends aiming for at least 10W per circuit for better stability. Please note that this is guidance, and use cases can vary dependent on the quality of the LEDs, the wiring etc.

Please note that when using smart bulbs, the minimum load for the RD1-Pro is deduced by the W used by the smart bulbs in their "OFF" state. i.e. If a smart bulb uses 1W when off, then multiple smart bulbs (or an LED bypass) will be needed.

Why does minimum load matter with LED or smart bulbs?

No-neutral dimmers need enough load to power their electronics and stabilise the circuit. Very low LED loads, and especially smart bulbs while they are logically off, may draw too little current and can cause flicker, flashing, instability, or pairing issues.

Although the minimum is 5W, a higher load gives more operating margin. LED drivers vary, and a 10W or higher total load is less likely to flicker or misbehave than a circuit right on the minimum.

Why do some LED bulbs work better than others?

LED bulbs contain different driver electronics. Dimmable quality, driver design, load size, and special features such as warm-tone electronics all affect compatibility. Use high-quality dimmable bulbs and avoid very low-load or unusual driver designs where stability is critical.

2. Dimming Modes & Range Calibration

Can I adjust the brightness range for my bulbs?

Yes. In Dimmer Mode and DPM wired-light use, the RD1/RD1-Pro supports custom minimum and maximum brightness settings. This is useful for avoiding low-level flicker or high-end flashing with some LED loads.

How do I set minimum brightness?

Enter minimum-brightness adjustment with 5 short presses plus a long 6th press. The LED should flash green twice. Turn the knob to the desired minimum, then save with 2 short presses. A solid green LED for about 3 seconds confirms the setting.

How do I set maximum brightness?

Enter maximum-brightness adjustment with 6 short presses plus a long 7th press. The LED should flash green twice. Turn the knob to the desired maximum, then save with 2 short presses. A solid green LED for about 3 seconds confirms the setting.

Can I choose between leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming?

Yes. The dimming technology can be toggled. The same command changes between trailing edge and leading edge, with LED feedback showing which mode has been selected.

Which dimming mode should I use for LEDs?

Use trailing edge first. It is the default and is recommended for most LED and CFL lamps. The setup confirmation for trailing edge is a solid red and green LED for about 3 seconds.

Which dimming mode should I use for halogen or older lamps?

Try leading edge where a halogen or older dimmable LED does not behave well on trailing edge. The dimming-technology command is 3 short presses plus a long 4th press; leading-edge confirmation is red and green flashing twice.

3. Troubleshooting Flickering & Off-State Flashing

Why do my bulbs flicker at low brightness?

The common causes are an incompatible or non-dimmable bulb, too little total load, a minimum brightness set too low, the wrong dimming technology, or a circuit that needs an LED bypass. Raise the minimum brightness and confirm the bulbs are high-quality dimmable lamps.

Why do my bulbs flash, pulse, or flicker when switched off?

In no-neutral or smart-bulb installations, a small current may still flow through the circuit. If the load is too low, that current can charge the bulb electronics and cause periodic flashing. A correctly installed LED bypass or a higher compatible load is usually required.
