1. Compatibility & Hardware Requirements

Can I use the RD1/RD1-Pro in a 2-way setup with another rotary dimmer?

Yes, but only with the Candeo RD1C companion dimmer. Do not use a second RD1/RD1-Pro or a third-party rotary dimmer on the same circuit.

What is the RD1C companion dimmer?

RD1C is the wired companion dimmer for RD1 and RD1-Pro. It provides physical rotary control from a second or third location, but it is not a Zigbee device and does not pair with the hub.

Can I use a third-party dimmer as the second dimmer?

No. Third-party dimmers are not compatible for RD1/RD1-Pro 2-way rotary dimming. Use RD1C companion dimmers only.

Can I use more than one RD1 or RD1-Pro on the same circuit?

No. Use only one RD1 or RD1-Pro per circuit. For additional switch points, use RD1C companion dimmers.

How many companion dimmers can I add?

Up to two RD1C companion dimmers can be used, allowing 3-way control.

Can I create 3-way control?

Yes. Use one RD1 or RD1-Pro primary dimmer plus up to two RD1C companion dimmers.

Does the RD1C companion dimmer work with the C202?

No. RD1C is for RD1 and RD1-Pro only. C202 2-way control uses retractive switches instead.

Can the RD1 and RD1-Pro use retractive switches for 2-way control?

No. For RD1 and RD1-Pro, 2-way or 3-way control must use RD1C companion dimmers, not retractive switches.

2. Operation, Wiring & Best Practices

How does the RD1C companion dimmer work?

RD1C communicates with the primary RD1/RD1-Pro over the companion wiring. The connecting wire is used for communication between the devices' controllers rather than as a conventional dimmer output.

Is the RD1C the same as a normal non-smart 2-way dimmer?

No. It looks and feels like a rotary control point, but electrically it works differently from a normal 2-way dimmer. It is designed specifically to communicate with RD1/RD1-Pro.

Why might there be a small delay when using the companion dimmer?

Because the RD1C and primary dimmer communicate electronically. Depending on wiring and use case there can be a startup/control delay of up to about 0.4 seconds.

Does the RD1C work when the RD1-Pro is in REM or DPM mode?

Yes. RD1C can still act as a 2-way control to the primary RD1-Pro when the RD1-Pro is in Remote Mode or Dual Purpose Mode, subject to the behaviour of that mode.

Can two RD1-Pro dimmers be connected together in the same circuit or multi-way setup?

No. Do not connect two RD1-Pro dimmers together as the two control points for the same circuit. Use one RD1-Pro primary plus RD1C companions.

What should I avoid when wiring two dimmers or companion dimmers?

Avoid connecting two smart dimmers together, mixing RD1C with C202, using third-party dimmers as companions, or connecting devices while they are in a mode not intended for that wiring arrangement. Follow the RD1/RD1C wiring diagram exactly.
